Overview

The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) has begun a corridor study of the Interstate 10 (I-10) from the Deck Park Tunnel to the I-10/I-17 Split interchange including portions of State Route 51 (SR 51) and the I-10/Loop 202/SR 51 system interchange, known as the “Mini Stack.”

The purpose of the study is to define a series of potential improvements to enhance safety, traffic operations, regional travel, and accessibility for this corridor.

Public Information Meeting

Public Meeting Survey

Public Meeting Survey

Please take our short survey! The study team is proposing improvements to several locations within the study area to improve safety and traffic flow. Please take the survey below by November 8, 2024.

Safety Issues are Priority

Bottleneck Locations within the Study Area

Based on public feedback and technical analysis, the study team identified potential improvements to increase safety, optimize freeway capacity and travel time, and protect existing communities and neighborhood access.

In developing the recommendations, the study team focused on locations along the corridor where bottlenecks begin. Bottlenecks can cause a wide differential in speeds and crashes occur more often in locations with speed differential. The study improvements specifically address each of these locations in the corridor.

The study improvements primarily involve reducing or eliminating weaving, improving traffic flow, reducing speed differential and increasing vehicles served and speeds in the study area.

Proposed Improvements

Proposed Improvement Locations

Proposed improvements include:

  • Braided Ramps

Removes the conflict between traffic entering the freeway from an on-ramp and traffic exiting the freeway to an off-ramp by relocating the on- and off-ramps and constructing a bridge.

  • Collector-Distributor (C-D) Road

Moves traffic onto a new parallel roadway to I-10 to separate through-traffic on I-10 from local traffic entering or exiting the freeway.

  • Freeway Mainline Improvements

Spot locations along east-and westbound I-10 from the Deck Park Tunnel to I-10/I-17 Split.

  • Additional High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes

On east- and westbound I-10 from the Deck Park Tunnel to the Mini-Stack.

  • New Ramp/Connection

    To Sky Harbor Circle North.

  • Ramp Relocation

Relocating off-ramp from westbound I-10 to Buckeye Road to the east.

Next Steps

Next Steps

This study is the first step in a multi-step process to improve travel on the I-10. Once this study is completed, the improvements identified will serve as a framework to begin design and environmental study by the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The design and implementation of improvements will be supported by funding through Proposition 479, the extension of the half-cent sales tax that will be on the November 2024 ballot.
